Intro to Bowl Turning

A one day class designed to teach the basics of cross-grain woodturning. Students end the day with a finished bowl turned from dry wood. The class will cover safety, safety equipment, turning tools and lathes, work holding, design, basic cross-grain turning, shaping on the lathe, hollowing, reverse chucking and finishing. Woodturning tools will include traditional gouges as well as newer carbide tipped tools.

Intro to Spindle Turning

  • Prerequisite: None. No experience required

A one day class designed to teach the basics of spindle turning. Students will end the day with a selection of finished bottle stoppers, small kitchen tools or other spindle projects. The class will cover safety, safety equipment, turning tools and lathes, work holding, design, basic spindle turning, shaping on the lathe and finishing. Spindle projects can include pizza cutters screwdrivers, ornaments, candle-holders, tool handles etc. Woodturning tools will include traditional gouges as well as the newer carbide tipped tools.

Turning with a box with a twist

Using the magic of multi-axis turning to create seemingly impossible to turn shape. This is lathe work on a whole new level. Students will expand their turning skill set to include multi-axis turning, safely holding work with multi-axis, visualizing the end result, turning with interrupted cuts. The possibilities are endless. Essentials of safety will be emphasized.

Segmented Wood Turning

  • Prerequisite: Completion of  Woodturning 1 and 2, or have previous bowl turning experience.
  • Oct 11, 18, 25, 2025
  • Saturdays, 9am – 4pm, with a break for lunch
  • Price: $500

During this fast-moving class students will learn the fundamentals of segmenting along with several intermediate techniques while making a segmented vase.  The class will cover the design process, basics of making segmented rings, designing feature rings, and making a vase in two parts without hollowing.   Students must have completed the turning 2 class or have previous bowl turning experience.  Students will be working on a lathe, table saw, and disk sander.

Skills include:

  • Making a project in multiple parts.
  • Making an alternate type of bottom.
  • Making a feature ring.
  • Making thin rings.

All projects wood will be provided. Turning tools will also be provided if you do not have your own. Bring your own personal protection equipment.
