This second course introduces the use of power tools and machinery as you build an Arts & Crafts–style table.
A core focus of the class is the milling process, the essential first step in furniture making. You will learn to rough-cut lumber, joint a face and an edge, rip to width, plane to thickness, and crosscut to final length, ensuring each board is accurately squared and ready for joinery and assembly
You’ll explore multiple approaches to mortise-and-tenon joinery using a router table, mortising machine, tenoning jig, and a Festool Domino, and gain confidence with jointers, planers, and saws.

At the end of nine weeks you will have built a functional and attractive end table. But more importantly, you will have gained the experience and confidence to work with hand and power tools safely and effectively.
Students need to bring the hardwood lumber of their choice to the first class!! Cut list diagram available below.

Class FAQ
- First day of class: students are expected to bring the wood they will need for constructing the table (see PDF below for the material list). We dive in on day one, so be sure to have your materials ready!
- Wood selection: At the end of class, you will have a beautiful end table you will want to keep forever. So select a hardwood that’s traditionally used for fine furniture. For example; oak, cherry, maple, ash, or walnut, to name a few. These are all available at Owl Lumber (see Resources page or locations). Do not bring construction lumber, such as what’s generally available from Home Depot, Menards, or Lowes.
- Tool & Supplies: Students should have safety glasses, hearing protection, a fractional dial caliper, chalk, and pencil (see Resources page for links or purchase locations).
- Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting saw-dusty.
- If you skip school for any reason, you must come to detention on Saturday at 9:00am! There is a $35 fee. If you miss a class you must make it up before the next class.
